Artist's Statement

My paintings are created spontaneously. Each gesture, every brushstroke, all color choices are improvised based on earlier layers. All is fair game for removal if necessary from the painting; nothing is precious on its own. The whole painting is what matters- no idea, no effect is too interesting to retain in the piece if it conflicts with the composition. Since there are no intentional references to actual objects or phenomena, my work could be considered 'abstract' or 'non-objective'. However, the pictorial elements in concert evoke landscape or figure, serving to depict vignettes from the inner world of a painter's mind.
